Subs and technology

ALL SUBS
  • HAVE their OWN log-ins to your computer.  DO NOT ever give out YOUR login or a computer logged in as you.
  • CAN get a laptop from me in the morning when they arrive.  BUT they will need to know if they need one or not based on YOUR lesson plan in Frontline
  • HAVE an @graniteschools.org email
Please do not use personal e-mails/phones for subs.  Work is work.  Home is home.
Problem is - You send them a text with a link and they now have it on their phone - NOT on the computer.  Or you send them a personal e-mail with information. You are now forcing them to open THEIR personal e-mail in front of YOUR students on the big screen.  Work is work!
Sub basics
Log in to computer.
  • Open Chrome
  • Go to the Portal www.portal.graniteschools.org
    • Check Frontline
    • Check e-mail.
    • Canvas?  (Sub does not have access to your class)

Here are some set-ups and BASIC instructions.  Copy your set-up and ADD/edit details as per you and your room!  Be sure the instructions are available to your subs.
  1. PC and projector.  Old school (but still works s-l-o-w-l- y!)
(This should go away as per district but I let you keep them.  Good or bad?  -> YES!)
  2. PC and smartboard (still, just a projector!)
  3. PC and Boxlight.
    1. There should be NONE of these - Too old with too new!
  4. Laptop and projector with dock (the current standard)
    1. If you leave your laptop - they can use that. All is good.
    2. They can plug their checked out laptop into your dock.
    3. Dock with external DVD player to show DVD.
  5. Laptop and Screenbeam
    1. Turn projector on
    2. Input as HDMI (1 or 2) per room.  Follow instructions on screen! (Windows/K...)
  6. Laptop and Boxlight
    1. Do you have your TV set as a monitor in your dock?
    2. Don't have them use Unplug'd from a sub laptop unless you leave the the IP address of your TV!
    3. Plug HDMI and USB wires in
This might be easier since the sub may not know the name of your boxlight!)
  7. Boxlight ONLY  (easiest for subs.)
    1. Have the sub use the Guest account on your Boxlight.  You can save documents  and links there.  Probably the easiest thing to do!
    2. On the first gen of boxlights there is NO account feature but they can still use the Boxlight ONLY.
  8.  I am sure I am missing some
    1. Lecture Hall
    2. Alumni Room
    3. Computer lab
    4. Music areas
    5. PE areas
Reward for reading all this!... AND showing having your tech/sub  instructions
I like the word of the day.  Let me know what it is and come get your external DVD player!  I have two...

LYNX Whiteboard

11/7/2023

There is a Whiteboard APP for the Boxlights TV's.- I played with it last year and it worked great.
Using Lynx app on the Boxlight / PC
This tool is similar to Note but it can be saved and worked on with your computer. Using the app.  So you can prepare lessons beforehand.

On your laptop…
  • Go the Microsoft Store. (search using the Windows icon at bottom left)
  • Find, download and install the Lynx Whiteboard app.
  • Create a Lynx account on your laptop
PS… this is much easier if you plug a keyboard into the USB ports on your tv.  Wired or Wiresless!
  • Click the waffle on the Home screen
  • Click the Orange Cleverstore button
  • Create an account with your school e-mail
  • In the store… Find the LYNX Whiteboard app and click on it.  If it is not on the home screen you can search for it on the top right.
  • Click the “Try the free edition” (green button) / next
  • Then “Go to My Apps”
  • Then click “Download”
  • The app will in stall in the “waffle” with the other apps.
  • Log in as you did on your PC.  It SHOULD sync between your computer and the APP on the TV!

Boxlights

Boxlights are great... but take a little getting used to.
I would be happy to come work with and show you any or all of the items below.
Laptops ONLY
  • If you have a boxlight you should NOT have a PC.  Use your laptop with your TV only.  If you do still have a PC... don't tell anyone!  They are old and outdated.
We  have 3 version of them with each of the installs.
  1. Is great
  2. Accounts were added and Lynx software can be downloaded.  (click for that info.)
There should be 3 accounts on the TV. You, Owner (admin), and Guest (for subs)
  3. Chrome was added in the apps but I can't figure out how to log in to it yet!  (Plus #2 above)
All Boxlights.
  1. It is a 2nd Monitor and you may have to adjust your displays. (Right click on desktop - display settings)
  2. You might have to change your sound output from computer speakers to...? (Not sure what it would be called!)
  3. Adjust volume by clicking the arrow on the right then "Input"
  4. Push and hold the power button to shut it down every night.
  5. Hard "Power Off" rocker switch under the TV where the power comes in.  (Just in case you need to know)
Use the Unplug'd APP
  1. Ideally you can fold your laptop over and travel around the room while you are presenting on your screen.  Or just be out amongst them and teach from there.
  2. It seems like you do NOT have to allow a connection anymore it just connects automatically when you open open the app.  It is doing that on the new ones anyway.  Not sure what will happen in future security.
  3. You can also leave your laptop at your desk (or where ever you want) and use a wireless keyboard and mouse to move about the room.  (a "clicker" might only advance slides)
 STAY WIRED
If you are still teaching from the front and for good reasons you may as well just hardwire your laptop.
  1. Plug the HDMI (carries A/V) and USB (for touch) cords into your laptop.  During installation these were left behind the TV.  KEEP them there!!!
  2. More security/reliability than a wired connection.
  3. You can STILL use a wireless keyboard and/or mouse to travel around the room and teach.
  4. You can also use the touchscreen.
  5. YOU MUST do this to show some video... aka Disney+ and other streams.
  6. If you're hardwired be sure to NOT open the Unplug'd app... (Remember how it connects automatically)
  7. Be sure to change your input to HDMI...
NO Computer - No problem
  1. The TV is just a big device anyway.
  2. Open the browser (Opera or Chrome) and go to your websites. They are mobile versions of the app but many sites let you switch to the desktop versions.
  3. Use the notes app to draw and teach.  Or LYNX app.
  4. Explore the other apps.
  5. Plug your wireless keyboard/mouse into the USB port on the TV and move to a desk
  6. Plug your doc cam into the TV and open the doc cam app on TV.
REWARDS
If you read all the way down here and do NOT have a wireless keyboard please come tell the "Word of the day" and get your keyboard.

Are your links opening in Edge?

Wait - What is Edge?
Edge is Microsoft's new browser that replaced IE a few years ago.  Being the Google people that we are we have gotten used to our bookmarks and how Chrome works along with our school Google products.  But if you click on on a link sent to you in an e-mail Outlook may be opening that link in Edge.  First be sure Chrome is your default browser on your PC.
  1. At the Windows icon on the bottom left starting typing "default apps"
  2. Click on "default apps
  3. Scroll down to "Web Browser" and be sure it is the browser of your choice.
Picture

Outlook is a Microsoft product and...!

  1. Open Outlook and click on File
  2. Click on "Advanced"
  3. Scroll down to "open hyperlinks from outlook to..." Change it to
    "default browser"  Click OK.

You're welcome! ;)

Finding Novels

Picture
If you ever get this "student screen" called Destiny Discover, just click on "Back Office" to get the older version.

This is a more user friendly version with all the same data and books.
If you would like to know what ELA novels we have...
  1. Go to Destiny.graniteschools.org find our school and log in at the top right
  2. Click on "Catalog" at the top.
    - In the WHITE drop down box that says "View All" there are 3 options.  Library, Resources or View All.  YOU will need to be in Resources or View All.  NOT Library.
  3. Left side "Resource Search"  (you could type something in but why...:))
  4. Click on the "Browse Resources" tab
  5. Click on "Novels"
    One more thing!
WWID - Click on Show all (pages) then Ctrl + F to find on page!  Easier and better than "searching" destiny!
Picture
There are currently 106 different novels, and is very dynamic as teachers request more and more books.  On the right side it shows how many we have and if other schools have any as well.   Please be sure that any library books are checked in and out so we can keep an accurate count.  These books are for you!

Microphones

Picture
As many of you start to use your microphones, you may notice that it does not work or does not work well or hold a charge.  The microphone system has been in the building since it opened  in 2013.  The system was even upgraded in 2019(ish).  However if you have not used your microphone the battery may have reached it's end of life.  If you are having issues please let me know and we can you a new battery and get your system working.

We do not collect the microphones they are expected to be stored in your AV closet or plugged in at your desk for use during the school year.  Each room classroom should have their own.

Once you start using it, the worst part is the regret you have for not using it sooner! ;)

Focus - Grades posting

Here is all I can currently tell you from one of our district level admins.

"There are a number of issues that have yet to be resolved around the final posting of grades. We met with Focus this morning to review all the needed changes. We are hopeful that they can address these items before the posting window opens on October 1st. The decision on the posting window will be done later this week and may be a last minute decision giving Focus the most time possible. There has been PD created for the currently available process for posting grades."

I personally am speechless.
Picture

Canvas Students

I am unaware if the removing of students is up-to-date in Canvas.  Again it is just a PITA for teachers and students.  Students and actual grades should be correct in Focus (however see above!).  From my district level Canvas peeps... "Our night upload of data is adding new students buy not removing the dropped students. - There is a ticket in and it has been escalated"

LanSchool Air

Picture
LanSchool Air seems to be working much better now.  The icon is (or should be) on your desktop.  If you want some help, I'd be happy to show you how to use it and its best feature of "Allow Only" websites."

Do not use LanSchool Air in a wired computer lab.  Continue with regular 'ol working just fine LanSchool!

Student Chromebooks

Please do NOT send students down to get a second chromebook.  We barely have enough Chromebooks for our students.  If they forget theirs on test day... Take advantage of the teacher moment and KARE -  ACCOUNTABLITY.

Textbook Inventory

6/9/2023

I just spent the last few days scanning and inventorying our Textbook room and thought I would let you know what textbooks we have and how many!  We have been told by our admin to not have student textbooks in  classrooms.  Students should come to the library and check them out and BE RESPONSIBLE for them.  (Of course there are always exceptions!)  So here is what we have!

To see what textbook are available log in to Destiny.  Every school uses Destiny so be sure you are at Olympus Sr.  Top right corner Log In with your AD credentials. (Link to Destiny)

  • Click “Catalog”
  • Click “Resource lists”
  • View any Content area for available titles.
  • Click “Details” to see how many we have in the textbook room.  (IF we need more let Julena know)
(If for instance it says 25 of 70. That means there are 45 unaccounted for – perhaps in a classroom, or still with a student.)  I will be deleted the lost items shortly.

Please let me know if you find any missing textbooks, titles or other errors.  This is for you to know what is available to you.  Also let me know if you have any textbooks in your room that need to come back.

Thank you.

Nothing actually "new"

If your desktop computer was just re-provisioned…
  1. Remember, according to “the district” you’re not even supposed to have it anymore.  It was replaced with a laptop.  I did not have a good reason to pull it!  We are aware that it is slow, which is why it was replaced!  Please be transitioning to using your laptop and docking stations.
  2. Most software can be installed yourself in the GSD Workspaces
  3. Network printers are still installed the same way!  Some of you have specific printer things and we can take of that.

Summer Free Audiobooks
I keep hearing from many of you about your Kindle or Audible accounts. Even as a librarian I am not sure why anyone buys books anymore!  (Yes, I realize SOME are must haves!)  Remember that GSD has had e-book to “check out” for quite some time now but Audiofile has been giving them away for free each summer for a few years now.  They have a great selection ALL SUMMER!
  1. Have pre-selected and well paired books 14 weeks – 28 free audiobooks.
  2. Must be downloaded the week they are available – but can listen ANYTIME. (It has already started with week 1!)
  3. Use the Sora App (same as GSD) but add the Audiofile library!
  4. Enjoy some audiobooks!

SENIORS and EMPLOYEE’s LEAVING GSD
  1. Please do NOT forget to take you documents with you!!
  2. Of course I have instructions! https://www.theolycenter.org/leaving-gsd.html
  3. Yes, you can do it yourself.  Of course I will help your or your seniors.
  4. NO, I cannot get them after you leave
  5. TELL YOUR SENIORS!

Install Software

Each time you log in to your computer the GSD Workspaces applications opens up.  If not, it is on your desktop and says... GSD Workspaces and has the GSD logo and a red square around it.

Please use that to install any missing applications that you may need.  If the software you are missing is NOT in the GSD Workspace, it can be added as requested.

To install the Unplug'd app.  be sure to install it AND move it.

Interesting?

3/17/2023

Today is 3/17/2023.  Joe Biden and Kamala Harris took office on 1/20/2021.  Two years and 2 months ago.  However if you did not know who the Vice President of the United State was and you did a search for it...  Here are some results!
Picture
Duck Duck Go
  • Harris - 2
  • Pence - 9
  • Biden - 3
Bing
  • Harris - 2
  • Pence - 5
  • Biden - 3
Google
  • Harris - 8
  • Pence - 0
  • Biden - 0
Yahoo
  • Harris - 2
  • Pence - 8
  • Biden - 3
Total images of VP's
  • Harris - 14
  • Pence - 23
  • Biden - 9

By these results you could very easily be confused or you could confidently (yet wrongly) assume that Pence is our current VP.

The importance of knowing how to search and what to look for is very important.  Change up search terms, don't believe all the results you get on 1 (or 4) search engines.

The importance of Databases.

Gale Power Search
  • Harris - 20
  • Pence - 0
  • Biden - 0
Gale databases are located in "Utah's Online Library" through UEN.org

Or talk to your librarian!

BTW
I lied in the e-mail!  If you need a wireless keyboard... Send me a Teams message saying how interesting this post is!! ;)
