LYNX Whiteboard

11/7/2023

There is a Whiteboard APP for the Boxlights TV's.- I played with it last year and it worked great.
Using Lynx app on the Boxlight / PC
This tool is similar to Note but it can be saved and worked on with your computer. Using the app.  So you can prepare lessons beforehand.

On your laptop…
  • Go the Microsoft Store. (search using the Windows icon at bottom left)
  • Find, download and install the Lynx Whiteboard app.
  • Create a Lynx account on your laptop
PS… this is much easier if you plug a keyboard into the USB ports on your tv.  Wired or Wiresless!
  • Click the waffle on the Home screen
  • Click the Orange Cleverstore button
  • Create an account with your school e-mail
  • In the store… Find the LYNX Whiteboard app and click on it.  If it is not on the home screen you can search for it on the top right.
  • Click the “Try the free edition” (green button) / next
  • Then “Go to My Apps”
  • Then click “Download”
  • The app will in stall in the “waffle” with the other apps.
  • Log in as you did on your PC.  It SHOULD sync between your computer and the APP on the TV!

Boxlights

Boxlights are great... but take a little getting used to.
I would be happy to come work with and show you any or all of the items below.
Laptops ONLY
  • If you have a boxlight you should NOT have a PC.  Use your laptop with your TV only.  If you do still have a PC... don't tell anyone!  They are old and outdated.
We  have 3 version of them with each of the installs.
  1. Is great
  2. Accounts were added and Lynx software can be downloaded.  (click for that info.)
There should be 3 accounts on the TV. You, Owner (admin), and Guest (for subs)
  3. Chrome was added in the apps but I can't figure out how to log in to it yet!  (Plus #2 above)
All Boxlights.
  1. It is a 2nd Monitor and you may have to adjust your displays. (Right click on desktop - display settings)
  2. You might have to change your sound output from computer speakers to...? (Not sure what it would be called!)
  3. Adjust volume by clicking the arrow on the right then "Input"
  4. Push and hold the power button to shut it down every night.
  5. Hard "Power Off" rocker switch under the TV where the power comes in.  (Just in case you need to know)
Use the Unplug'd APP
  1. Ideally you can fold your laptop over and travel around the room while you are presenting on your screen.  Or just be out amongst them and teach from there.
  2. It seems like you do NOT have to allow a connection anymore it just connects automatically when you open open the app.  It is doing that on the new ones anyway.  Not sure what will happen in future security.
  3. You can also leave your laptop at your desk (or where ever you want) and use a wireless keyboard and mouse to move about the room.  (a "clicker" might only advance slides)
 STAY WIRED
If you are still teaching from the front and for good reasons you may as well just hardwire your laptop.
  1. Plug the HDMI (carries A/V) and USB (for touch) cords into your laptop.  During installation these were left behind the TV.  KEEP them there!!!
  2. More security/reliability than a wired connection.
  3. You can STILL use a wireless keyboard and/or mouse to travel around the room and teach.
  4. You can also use the touchscreen.
  5. YOU MUST do this to show some video... aka Disney+ and other streams.
  6. If you're hardwired be sure to NOT open the Unplug'd app... (Remember how it connects automatically)
  7. Be sure to change your input to HDMI...
NO Computer - No problem
  1. The TV is just a big device anyway.
  2. Open the browser (Opera or Chrome) and go to your websites. They are mobile versions of the app but many sites let you switch to the desktop versions.
  3. Use the notes app to draw and teach.  Or LYNX app.
  4. Explore the other apps.
  5. Plug your wireless keyboard/mouse into the USB port on the TV and move to a desk
  6. Plug your doc cam into the TV and open the doc cam app on TV.
REWARDS
If you read all the way down here and do NOT have a wireless keyboard please come tell the "Word of the day" and get your keyboard.

Each time you log in to your computer the GSD Workspaces applications opens up.  If not, it is on your desktop and says... GSD Workspaces and has the GSD logo and a red square around it.

Please use that to install any missing applications that you may need.  If the software you are missing is NOT in the GSD Workspace, it can be added as requested.

To install the Unplug'd app.  be sure to install it AND move it.

Lynx is an "App" you can use on your Boxlight that is quite powerful AND there is software that you can use on your computer to build a lesson... then open it on your TV.  Very similar to the way SMART software works.
To Download Lynx...
  1. Search for the Microsoft Store
  2. Open Microsoft Store. (no need to log in)
  3. Search for "Lynx"
  4. Click on "Install"  Mine says Installed as I already have it.

Our Google Map

Our map is on the directory page and live!  Of the 100+ people that are on this list thanks to all those who responded - Check it out.  Pretty fun to see where our School staff is from and where they like to go.  I am sure these items will be included in a Goosechase or scavenger hunt next year.  NO, it is NOT too late to send me your info

Outlook App (aka e-mail)

E-mail - As mentioned last week about “Contacts” on your phone… along those same lines… Instead of adding your school e-mail account to your phones “Accounts” and mixing your personal email with your work e-mail… Just download the Outlook App and you can have most of the same functionality as you do in other versions of Outlook!  There are rumors that @graniteschools e-mail (via Microsoft) may not work on your phone soon. UNLESS you have the app.  It is so much easier anyway.  Plus you get your Calendars!
Next week I will show you how cool using OneDrive on your phone can be.

Disney+

Now that Disney+ is open for teachers, I figured out why it seems blocked on some devices!  Those pesty boxlights!  It’s an easy fix.  On the TV open Opera, the web browser and go to purple.com.  Type it in, don’t search for it.  It should be blocked by iBoss.  It probably says you’re a student.  Click on "Log in" and.. log in.  It should change to Teacher.  You should be able to log into Disney+ now.  BUT be sure to log off as anyone can now use your account on the TV.  IF you want to stream it from your PC you must change your audio source to get A and V.  Seems like many of you may only be getting one or the other.

If the audio Is not playing via your sound system… I figured that out too.  Right click the sound settings in the task bar and change the output.  To what you say?  I don’t know – one that works!  Sorry each of you have slightly different setups!

Web Cast to a boxlight

11/8/2022

With the newest version of the boxlight software students can "Cast" to your TV.  You will need to turn on WebCast and know your code but it is easy to do.  Then your students go to a website (https://w.unplugd.app/) and put in your code. You can turn WebCast on and off easily enough.  The code or ID is blacked out in the image below.  I would NOT show students this screen - it is too small and you should not make your IP address public.  Go old school and write the code and website on the board!  Or better yet - make a page and save it to files folder on Boxlight.

Students will be give then option to present whole desktop or tab... It really should not matter.  They can also check the box to play audio.  All up to what you are wanting from students.  So have at it!

Boxlight Settings

The problem with teaching students is they get smart and curious and figure things out.  Well they figured out how to, as a few teachers put it... "hack the TV's".  So we just have a few simple things we need to change.
On the TV touch the arrow on the right or left side. then the blue settings box. (Teacher Control Center)
Picture

In the Teacher Control Panel change
  • Share Screen to = Need Authorization
  • View, control... = Disable

These settings can easily be changed back.

Picture
Because of this... You will have to give
YOURSELF permission to view your computer on YOUR screen. Touch "Allow".

If you do not recognize the computer name or not expecting anyone to be on your TV.  Deny them access!

iOS Account

Personal Devices
If you have a personal device (aka – iPhone*) and have your school e-mail/contacts on it (aka – Outlook)… Please be sure that your PERSONAL contact is your default.  Why you say?...  When you add a contact on YOUR PERSONAL phone you want it in your PERSONAL account.  If / when you leave Granite you do NOT want to lose all your contacts that you have added over the years… You may have been adding them to your GSD account and not your personal account.  To find out or change your default Contacts account.. go to Settings – Contacts… the Default button is towards the bottom.

In Outlook you can Export your contacts and import them into Gmail from a CSV file.   I’d be happy to show you if you’d like.

*I am sure you can do the same thing on other devices... I just don't have one so don' know how!

Disney+ Update (Hulu, Netflix...)

Picture
Even though it is for personal use only (according to their contract)  It appears there is a loophole!  Disney+ is now open FOR TEACHERS not students and only on GSDX.  It is still blocked on the Guest network.

All (that I know of) streaming services are this way

(PS/FYI – I have nothing to do what is and is not blocked). But I do know this violates copyright law and your usage agreement!

OH, and

GO VOTE!

If you read this far and want a free book - come see me and say... I voted!
