Zoom Update

12/3/2020

Now that we have our own Zoom account via Granite District and not the state there are a few, but slight, differences.
  1. We found that many users had the Breakout room options turned off.  It is still there but you may need to turn it on.
  2. You can now for a log-in with a school e-mail.  Which will display their "proper" names.  Also good for attendance purpose.
  3. Turn individual chats,  screen sharing, backgrounds and name changing on or off!

There are too many options to go through them all but watch the video below for some import basic ones for teachers.

These options are best set using the https://zoom.us/ website and can be "somewhat" edited in individual meetings.

Search Google Drive

11/23/2020

... and NOT see all the student files!

Remember that Google thinks you want to see and find EVERYTHING and ANYTHING.  But in reality you're only looking for YOUR own files!

Watch the video to see how to search or display only YOUR items.

I forgot to mention... After you click your icon it will say "owner:me" in the search bar.  Then type what you are looking for!

It is different in Drive, than in your Document type. Either;
Click "Your icon" in the search box or
Click "Owned by ..." in the column heading.

This may  not seem like that big of a deal to most.  But when you have 150 students and 10 assignments (at least) that turns into 150 x 10 or
1500 extra documents you may (not need to) see!

PC's

Part A - Windows update
  1. Click on the Windows icon in the bottom left and start typing updates. "Check for Updates"* should pop up. Hit "enter."
  2. Click on the "Check for updates" box (no image)
  3. Each machine will be a little different depending on when you last got updates. Generally they come out Every Tuesday!
  4. Restart when or if it tells you to.
  5. Run updates again. And again until it says you are up to date.
*You could also go to "Windows Settings" and click "Update & Security". There are many ways to get there.

Chromebooks

This includes Chrome on a PC!
  1. Click the 3 dots by your name.
  2. Click on "Help"
  3. Click on "About Google Chrome"

It will then say what version of Chrome you are using and if there is an update.  Different devices can only run certain versions of the software so I cannot tell you what the latest version of chrome is. Wikipedia can

  4. You should also remove your user and re-login to the device.

Powerwash it

Click here for steps to PowerWash a Chromebook.
(You'll need to view them on a different device.)

Part B - Update GSD "stuff"
  1. Click the Windows Icon. Click All Apps.
  2. Scroll Down to the I's and click "Ivanti Management"
  3. Click “Security Scan”.
  4. Lock your computer. (Windows key L)
  5. Go home! ;)  Or do something else while the updates run...
Do the same steps AGAIN... Yes, twice (at least) until it says you are up to date.   However it may be best to have us re-provision your computer.  After a re-provision though we still run updates!

Zoom Quckie

I keep saying how “Complicated” zoom is because of the options at set up.

It does not have to be!

Here is a Quick way to set up zoom meeting without all the fuss… and NOT let students change their name.

Zoom Safely

11/6/2020

Zoom has many options and has always been a great tool.  With many options comes much confusion and … many options.

One option is for a user (such as teenager) to change their display name and picture.  I am sure you can imagine where that could go…(and has gone).  Of course teachers should kick anyone out with improper names.  BUT What if one Kid types another kids name… and says “rude” things?...

Have less fear as there are options!
  1. Don’t use zoom if you are concerned.
  2. Google Meet and Teams both force users to their respective usernames and images.

If you use Zoom (options) details are below.
  1. Force the user to “require authentication” see below on what the teacher does and what the student will see.
  2. Or, after your meeting starts In the participants list you have an option to Allow (by checking) or NOT allow by unchecking the box that says “Allow user to change display name”  Be sure it is UNCHECKED.  It seems to be checked by default.

New Computer?

10/27/2020

If you are getting a new computer or getting re-provisoned

This is a good time to clean up your files and desktop.  When you open "This PC"  you will notice a cloud icon next to Documents, Desktop, and Pictures.  Those 3 folders are synced to your online, OneDrive account.  Meaning those 3 folders are accessible from anywhere online.  Including a smart phone with the OneDrive app.

You <in theory> won't loose anything stored in those 3 folders!

You will loose

Outlook items

"Bookmarks" (Chrome, IE, Firefox)

  • Non saved contacts*
  • Signature file* (easy to re-create)
  • Probably other <non-important> items!

I am not sure why but outlook does NOT sync those items.

IE Favorites
Google bookmarks (If you are NOT logged in)
(Does anyone use Firefox anymore? Export them.)

Options. (see videos below)
Be logged into Chrome. Not Drive. Chrome.
Export your IE favorites

Chrome Bookmarks

IE Favorites

In summary

  • Documents, Desktop, and Pictures are all backed up to the cloud. Save All documents to those folders.
  • IE favorites are NOT saved and must be exported.
  • Save email addresses as a Contact
  • Google Bookmarks ARE saved IF you are logged in to CHROME.
  • Export your IE fav's. Only if you have enough to worry about.
  • You do not need to delete anything.
  • Know what printers or other specific to you, software you need.

Adding People to Canvas

10/27/2020

Howdy hey!
I get quite a few teachers asking me to add another person or teacher to their Canvas class.  You (the teacher) can also do this in your own classes.
  1. Click on "People"
  2. Click the blue "+People" button
  3. Add their "e-mail address"
  4. be sure to give the correct "Role"
Then click next.

Please understand that if you give someone "Teacher"  rights they have the same rights as you!

Cheating?

10/26/2020

A Utah student is in the National/World news for creating a popular cool program!
https://oklahomawatch.org/2020/10/23/cheat-codes-students-search-for-shortcuts-as-virtual-schooling-expands/
Too bad it’s for “cheaters”!

And it is on PBS, Frontline
https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/article/students-search-for-shortcuts-as-virtual-schooling-expands/

(Some items from the article)
…Quizlet, another homework help website, entire test keys are posted
…said she found 90% of the answers for her senior English and history classes online
…“they were classes I needed to graduate and none of that information I will need in my career.”

My input is that these kids are not “cheating on purpose”  They may sincerely look for a help and type in the question from the book or other sources… And google does it’s job to find the same question… and possibly an answer.  Posted by, maybe even a teacher doing a side gig for a different website such as Brainly! https://boards.greenhouse.io/brainly.  We teach students how to find answers and content on-line.  Now when they look up content.. they’re cheating?

Best part of it all
is the fact that In person teaching (us, and our jobs) are wanted/needed!
“He believes the best tool to combat cheating is cementing the student to teacher relationships.”

Yes, recoding or manipulated a website to take a picture of a higher score on the student screen... Is cheating.  Looking up an answer on the internet - not cheating.

Canvas new QUARTER

10/23/2020

Two quick things for the start of  a new quarter.

  1. How to NOT see last quarter's assignments.  Easy, peasy!  Go your Canvas Assignments tab.  At the top there is a dropdown menu that says "Grading Period".  Chose grading period 2.  Viola!  If you need to see an assignment from a previous grading period just change it back.
  2. Do not cross-list your classes at a quarter break.  You will lose your data that is currently in your class.  Cross-listing (properly) must be done at the start of a class, or semester.

What about Modules?

Q. Can we “hide” or not show the modules?
A. Not like you can Assignments, but…

There are ways!
  1. It should not matter.  Modules should be by date so just keep adding more modules at the top.  Old modules will be still be there at the bottom and not used.
  2. If you really do not want them there… Unpublish them.  BUT then the kids can’t see them.  You will still see them.  Theoretically and Chronologically you should be done with them.
