Now that we have our own Zoom account via Granite District and not the state there are a few, but slight, differences.
These options are best set using the https://zoom.us/ website and can be "somewhat" edited in individual meetings. ... and NOT see all the student files!
This may not seem like that big of a deal to most. But when you have 150 students and 10 assignments (at least) that turns into 150 x 10 or

I keep saying how “Complicated” zoom is because of the options at set up.
It does not have to be! Here is a Quick way to set up zoom meeting without all the fuss… and NOT let students change their name. |
|
Zoom has many options and has always been a great tool. With many options comes much confusion and … many options.
One option is for a user (such as teenager) to change their display name and picture. I am sure you can imagine where that could go…(and has gone). Of course teachers should kick anyone out with improper names. BUT What if one Kid types another kids name… and says “rude” things?...
Have less fear as there are options!
If you use Zoom (options) details are below.

- Don’t use zoom if you are concerned.
- Google Meet and Teams both force users to their respective usernames and images.
If you use Zoom (options) details are below.
- Force the user to “require authentication” see below on what the teacher does and what the student will see.
- Or, after your meeting starts In the participants list you have an option to Allow (by checking) or NOT allow by unchecking the box that says “Allow user to change display name” Be sure it is UNCHECKED. It seems to be checked by default.

If you are getting a new computer or getting re-provisoned
This is a good time to clean up your files and desktop. When you open "This PC" you will notice a cloud icon next to Documents, Desktop, and Pictures. Those 3 folders are synced to your online, OneDrive account. Meaning those 3 folders are accessible from anywhere online. Including a smart phone with the OneDrive app.
You <in theory> won't loose anything stored in those 3 folders! |
|
You will loose
Outlook items |
"Bookmarks" (Chrome, IE, Firefox) |
I am not sure why but outlook does NOT sync those items. |
IE Favorites
Google bookmarks (If you are NOT logged in) (Does anyone use Firefox anymore? Export them.) Options. (see videos below) Be logged into Chrome. Not Drive. Chrome. Export your IE favorites |
Chrome Bookmarks |
IE Favorites |
In summary
- Documents, Desktop, and Pictures are all backed up to the cloud. Save All documents to those folders.
- IE favorites are NOT saved and must be exported.
- Save email addresses as a Contact
- Google Bookmarks ARE saved IF you are logged in to CHROME.
- Export your IE fav's. Only if you have enough to worry about.
- You do not need to delete anything.
- Know what printers or other specific to you, software you need.
Howdy hey! I get quite a few teachers asking me to add another person or teacher to their Canvas class. You (the teacher) can also do this in your own classes.
Please understand that if you give someone "Teacher" rights they have the same rights as you! |

My input is that these kids are not “cheating on purpose” They may sincerely look for a help and type in the question from the book or other sources… And google does it’s job to find the same question… and possibly an answer. Posted by, maybe even a teacher doing a side gig for a different website such as Brainly! https://boards.greenhouse.io/brainly. We teach students how to find answers and content on-line. Now when they look up content.. they’re cheating?
Best part of it all
is the fact that In person teaching (us, and our jobs) are wanted/needed!
“He believes the best tool to combat cheating is cementing the student to teacher relationships.”
Yes, recoding or manipulated a website to take a picture of a higher score on the student screen... Is cheating. Looking up an answer on the internet - not cheating.

What about Modules?
Q. Can we “hide” or not show the modules?
A. Not like you can Assignments, but…
There are ways!
A. Not like you can Assignments, but…
There are ways!
- It should not matter. Modules should be by date so just keep adding more modules at the top. Old modules will be still be there at the bottom and not used.
- If you really do not want them there… Unpublish them. BUT then the kids can’t see them. You will still see them. Theoretically and Chronologically you should be done with them.
