Boxlight Settings

The problem with teaching students is they get smart and curious and figure things out.  Well they figured out how to, as a few teachers put it... "hack the TV's".  So we just have a few simple things we need to change.
On the TV touch the arrow on the right or left side. then the blue settings box. (Teacher Control Center)

In the Teacher Control Panel change
  • Share Screen to = Need Authorization
  • View, control... = Disable

These settings can easily be changed back.

Because of this... You will have to give
YOURSELF permission to view your computer on YOUR screen. Touch "Allow".

If you do not recognize the computer name or not expecting anyone to be on your TV.  Deny them access!

iOS Account

Personal Devices
If you have a personal device (aka – iPhone*) and have your school e-mail/contacts on it (aka – Outlook)… Please be sure that your PERSONAL contact is your default.  Why you say?...  When you add a contact on YOUR PERSONAL phone you want it in your PERSONAL account.  If / when you leave Granite you do NOT want to lose all your contacts that you have added over the years… You may have been adding them to your GSD account and not your personal account.  To find out or change your default Contacts account.. go to Settings – Contacts… the Default button is towards the bottom.

In Outlook you can Export your contacts and import them into Gmail from a CSV file.   I’d be happy to show you if you’d like.

*I am sure you can do the same thing on other devices... I just don't have one so don' know how!

Disney+ Update (Hulu, Netflix...)

Picture
Even though it is for personal use only (according to their contract)  It appears there is a loophole!  Disney+ is now open FOR TEACHERS not students and only on GSDX.  It is still blocked on the Guest network.

All (that I know of) streaming services are this way

(PS/FYI – I have nothing to do what is and is not blocked). But I do know this violates copyright law and your usage agreement!

OH, and

GO VOTE!

Scan using Apple Notes

9/8/2020

I get a lot of "calls" asking to install or how to use our scanners.  Scans are great to take a paper document to turn it in to a .pdf and post on your Canvas page.  But did you know you might have one of the best scanners already in your hand?
Your iPhone!  Using Notes and be sure you are logged in to Notes with your Apple ID.  Watch the video to learn how.
  • Open Notes
  • Create a new note
  • Click the Camera button
  • Select Scan Document
  • Scan the document "paper" click the record or take picture button
  • Save it
  • Upload (Share to) to your Google Drive.
YOU MUST already be logged in to your Google Drive app on your phone.
  • I created a folder called Scans.
  • Go to your Google Drive on a computer.  Find the scans folder and share it just as you would  a normal document to link or embed on your Canvas page.
Much easier than using your PC or copier.
Why NOT  a picture? Compare them yourself!
Below are non-edited Scan vs a Picture of the same document taken the same way.
  • A "Scan" looks for the image to "scan"
  • It saves as .pdf
  • Here is a Picture

Screen Recordings

The battle is on Loom or ScreenCastify
https://www.graniteschools.org/edtech/tip/blended-learning/screencasting/

ScreenCastify

Please see the posts here already.

Pros
  • Submit
  • Saves to Google Drive

Cons
  • NOT free
  • Click here and let me know if you want it!

Loom

Just as simple and works pretty much the same. Records video, screen, or both.

Pros -
  • iOS App
  • Free for life for educators
  • Desktop version
  • App Records Audio and Video

Cons -
  • Not as easy.  some features are harder to find but still there.
  • No Submit plug in.
  • Does not save to Google Drive
  • iOS does have a screen record option but does not include audio nor does it save it to your Loom account. (I think this is a pro!)

Are there others?

I am sure there are.  I am also sure there will be new ones coming out soon too!  But pick one of these two and KISS!
Stream is Microsoft's product.  It even transcribes the audio! https://web.microsoftstream.com/ Log in to your  O365 account to find it.

No one is stopping you from using both either!

Deleting Photos

Memory is full warning

Ya know how in MS Outlook you have to Empty your deleted e-mails folder?... Well it seems "Photos" has taken the same process.

You can trash all the photos you want to make room on your iPhone. But those photos are not removed from your device so it really does not make more room on your phone!
To actually get rid of them (after you "trash" them you can go to Photos/Albums/Recently Deleted and you will notice a message that says they will be deleted in 30 days (or however many days are left until the 30 days are up).  You can use the button on the bottom left to "Remove" the photos.

Apple says this is the issue now because people delete photos that they did not want to delete.  Now they have 30 days to get them out of a "recently deleted" folder.  I guess it makes sense but if you're trying to make room on your phone - don't forget to "remove" the deleted photos.
