PC's

Chromebooks (and Chrome)

 Part A - Windows update
  1. Click on the Windows icon (#1 below) and start typing u-p- d-a... (updates) "Check for Updates" should pop up.
  2. Click on the "Check for updates" box
  3. Restart when or if it tells you to.
  1. Click the 3 dots by your name.
  2. Click on "Help"
  3. Click on "About Google Chrome"
It will then say what version of Chrome you are using and if there is an update.  Different devices can only run certain versions of the software so I cannot tell you the latest version.

Part B - Update GSD "stuff"
  1. Click the Windows Icon. Click All Apps.
  2. Scroll Down to the I's and click "Ivanti Management"
  3. Click “Security Scan”.
  4. Lock your computer. (Windows key L)
  5. Go home! ;)  Or do something else while the updates run...
However it may be best to have us re-provision your computer.

Other software

Normally you can check for updates in any software under a "Help" or "About" tab (or menu).  It all depends on which software you are using.  Perhaps it is settings as well and when the software starts there is a message that tells you there is an update.  You can turn that off (or on) by checking some box in settings (preferences) for that software.

Three Great WAYS!
  1. In Canvas go to Grades. At the top near the Assignment title click the 3 dots and chose... "Message students who..."
Pros - perfect for specific/individual assignments!
Cons - does not send to parents

  2. In Grade book
Go to your class.  Top left click the e-mail icon.  Chose recipients Include Progress reports, attendance...) Pros - can include a progress report, include "parents"
Cons - No record of it as it comes from grade book

  3. In Grade book
Go to Reports, chose GSD Preferred Student e-mail
Three options of student e-mails "preferred", GSD, Google e-mail address in pdf or xls formats
Pro - Clicking on the @email.com opens YOUR e-mail program to send.  There will be a record of it.
Cons - It's another file for you to keep somewhere.  Do not add them to your contacts - there's too many!

All three of these methods have video instructions here!  The page is password protected as I don't have time to edit out student data.  Teachers may ask me for the password.

Gradebook

Whoa Bad me!  Totally forgot about PBL.
Yes, you will have to use gradebook to enter PBL scores.  Sorry!

Also understand the point of this is for you to NOT enter scores or assignments twice!

Gradebook has 2 required uses.
  1. Attendance
  2. Posting of Midterms and final grades

So right now you do not need to even log in to it.  All your assignments are and should be completed in Canvas.  And Canvas only.  Assignments will push to Gradebook.  I have always had people ask about assignments that are not completed "electronically" or in Canvas.  Not a problem.  Put scores in Canvas - Stay out of Gradebook!

I am seeing teachers put content in Canvas as an assignment, then go to GSD Gradebook and adding the same assignment to enter scores.  You're working to hard and adding too much data! Just record the scores in Canvas.  Either in the Grades screen above or in Speed Grader below.

Safari Montage

SM is a website/server we have which hosts Digital Content... Mostly movies/DVD's for resources for teachers to use in the classroom.  Content can be searched for from our library catalog software...

Teacher "Emergency" question to me...

" I'm in the Safari Montage for Hiroshima and it says today that the file is not available.  I showed it yesterday.  Any suggestions?"

I logged in and had the same problem so I sent it on...

Our tech guy's response

"I am actually sitting in the server building waiting for a call back from SAFARI Montage support right now.  We upgraded supplemental content drives this morning and it did not go as expected, but they haven’t figured out the problem yet.  I had tested some of the content to make sure at least it still played, and what I tested worked, but this makes me think that maybe it is a bigger problem than I thought"

My response... UPDATES HAPPENed!

2 hrs later...

"It has been determined by tech. support that the SAFARI Montage server software needs to be upgraded to resolve the problems we are having.  The upgrade process takes several hours.  Since about ¾ of the content in SAFARI Montage is currently unplayable and will remain that way until the software and hardware upgrades have been performed, I have asked them to begin the upgrade immediately rather than waiting until after-school hours."
SM is a great tool and the guy who runs it is great too.  But that does not help with the frustrations of a teacher not be able to play a simple video in her classroom!
