  • Country Reports!  - https://www.countryreports.org/
A (for profit) website build by an inspired former student of ours. (here is the article - https://blog.countryreports.org/2011/02/21/where-did-the-idea-for-countryreports-come-from/)
I talked him in to an Alumni account and here is the log-in info! Username:  Olympus PW:  Titans

  • Scrible - https://www.scrible.com/
When you start your Research papers with your class, please don’t forget about Scrible.  Scrible gives students annotation, bibliography, outlining, website collection tools and  you can see all their work as they progress through their research.  I would be happy to spend the day (or period) to show your students (and you) how to use this collaborative tool.  We have received MANY positive comments back from students.

  • Hamilton tickets!
The Utah Department of Cultural & Community Engagement is inviting high school students to participate in "One Utah: A 'Revolutionary' Contest." Seventy students will win a ticket to the Broadway touring production of "Hamilton" on Saturday, Jan. 22.
To enter, Utah students are invited to write a letter to Gov. Spencer J. Cox or Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson about how to make Utah better.
Details about the contest here. Here's where to submit your entry.
Submissions accepted through Dec. 14 (cut off at 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 14).

For this week’s Techie Tuesday…

I know a few of you were doing “Day of the Dead” activities (and I know this may be a little late but… It is still pretty cool what the West Valley Arts Cultural Center has put together https://www.wvcarts.org/art-online-dia-de-los-muertos.html  I also hope you may have searched the Arts and Culture link I sent last week.

Veterans Day
  • Library of Congress. https://www.loc.gov/search/?in=&q=veterans+day&new=true&st= In searching there are over 190,000 entries, so it can be difficult to pick out only a few.
  • In the National Archives - https://www.archives.gov/news/topics/veterans-day
  • Defense .gov - https://www.defense.gov/News/Feature-Stories/Story/Article/1675470/5-facts-to-know-about-veterans-day/ 5 facts about the day
  • U of U https://veteransday.utah.edu/schedule-of-events/  if you’re looking for something a little more local

LanSchool
  • For those who are waiting on LanSchool to happen in your room... We have run into a SNAFU and it IS coming soon!
  • If you still want it and did not request it earlier on the form, please just put in a work order and we will get it to you.
UEN
  • A couple of you have asked about UEN's Pioneer Library for home use.  Great Question and great resources at UEN.  I cannot post the log in here as it is a public site.  BUT I will e-mail it to you and explain how to get it.

In the Library this month will be featuring NonFic(tion) November!  The TA’s are making some display’s for each of the 10 big categories!

What do <list below> have in common?

  • Find a grave
  • Data.gov
  • The Library of Congress (LOC)
  • The FBI
  • FOIA (freedom of information act)
  • Fed Flix (National Archives movie index)
  • NSA
  • MIT Visualizing History
  • The Morgue files
  • Primary Sources
None of the them are “indexed” or searched deeply by Google!  Which means students may never see these websites unless they get direct links and reason to go there.  Those links and many more can be found on the search engines of TheOlyCenter.org website.  If one of those links perked your interest – go to the search engine page to find the link!  There are a few hundred more of them broken down by discipline for you and your topic.  If you have any topics or links to add please don’t be shy – I would be happy to add them or build you a list.

If your monitors have switched for some reason here is how to switch them back!

Looking at the pictures on the right....
Right click on the desktop and chose Display Settings.
Click on "Identify" to see which screen is which.  (These numbers do not really matter - they are just identifiers.)
Picture
Picture

Click AND drag the numbers to rearrange your monitors.  YES you can put them on TOP of each other but you probably do NOT want to.

You probably just need them next to each other.

Don't forget to click on "Apply"

Pick-A-Time Login

We used this last year so either log in, click on forgot password or create your own account!  Go here to pickatime (https://pickatime.com/granitesd)  Fill out the info.  If you need to create an account use your @graniteschools.org e-mail and I suggest your same AD password.
At the top click the "Admin UI" link.
"Pick A Time" has many options and details but you (teachers) really only need to do two (2) things.
  1. Paste your Zoom link in the "Virtual Room" column so that parents will get the link in their e-mail.
Also add your room number.  Turn in your zoom link here too.
  2. Block out your 4 5-min. breaks.  If you do not do this in time you may not have any breaks.  Parents start signing up on Feb. 1.
You can log back in to check your schedule before conferences.
Written instructions?  Going from memory!
  1. Log in to Zoom.us make sure you have your @graniteschools.org and are licensed
  2. Under Profile find your personal link. Click Customize and it should change to your username.
  3. Go to Meetings on the left. Personal Room at the top. Click EDIT.  Be sure passcode is unchecked. Check "Allow meeting room".  Allow/require video for both. Copy the personal meeting room url.
  4. Log in to Pick a time. Click on Admin UI at the top
  5. Click on Events / Management on left. Pick the (Virtual event) click the orange button (Go to event)
  6. Click the X in the blue boxes to block out 4  5 minute time slots.
  7. On the Far Right are a few columns.  One says virtual link.  PASTE  your Zoom URL there.
  8. Add your room # as well.
  9. There is no Save button.
  10. At the top click the Drop down.  It should say the Virtual night... Change it to the in PERSON night.
  11. Block out your 4 time slots again for the second evening.
  12. On the far right again ADD your room number.
  13. There is no save option, but be sure to log out of PickATime.

Sign up is set to close for parents an hour before conferences.  Log back in and print or view your schedule.  Your parents should show up in your Zoom waiting room.  Let them in, in order according to your PickATime schedule.

Cross-listing and Importing content to Canvas classes

8/12/2021

Think of cross-listing as combing like classes!  Be sure to combine the correct classes!  You cannot undo this.
 It is very important to.
Import from the correct class!  Remove due dates!
(If you do not remove them you will be deleting each item individually)
A file with just the steps as a refresher! --->
Crosslist your classes first.

Important information about your new microphones, and DVD players in the cabinets!

Here are some basic LAPTOP items
  1. Run Updates.  https://www.updateshappen.com/run-updates.html ASAP!!!!
  2. Monitors are not in yet – which means I am NOT setting them up in your room yet.  I have no ETA for this.
  3. They do not sleep when the lid closes.  Some of you may not want it too so that it is still usable while plugged in to your dock.  You must use Windows – L to lock the device.
  4. Updates Happen blog has a bunch of info under the laptop category

Please ask any questions.  There is a lot… I know.

No more closet DVD/VHS players

7/22/2021

The problem? - It is the inputs to the sound system /amplifier!   There are two; one for your microphone and one for your PC.  I am looking for a work around but it is time to move past these devices too.
Picture
Instead you should be playing DVD's or videos on your computer.  Now the question is WHICH COMPUTER?
Or which computer hook up!
Options
  1. Teacher desk with DESKTOP computer DVD drive and VLC player.
  2. *Teacher desk with LAPTOP set up.
You will need an external DVD player to plug in to your dock.
  3. *Second desk with DESKTOP computer DVD drive and VLC player.
You will NOT have audio from your TEACHER laptop desk.
  4. Screenbeam video to projector.
DOES not send audio to speakers.  Sound comes out projector speaker.
Seems like a "no-brainer" to do #1 and use your laptop "as a laptop" as needed.
Don't forget that subs will need access to a computer to play videos as well.

No more VHS

You may notice that none of the options include an analog VHS player.  Sorry those are just too old to use anymore.
