Google Meet update!

4/11/2020

 Imagine that... an update!
GSD has enabled this https://meet.google.com/!  YOU, teachers can create your own "room".  That room STAYS permanent.
Students go to the same page https://meet.google.com/ and type in your "code" to join your room. Students cannot create rooms they can only join.
It is easy in theory BUT YOU must be in the room already.  Students CANNOT create their room.  Just like they are NOT suppose to be unsupervised in classrooms!  They must also be logged in to google with they @GRANITESD acct.  (#security!)
1.  Click on Start Meeting.
2.  Create a nickname.  Click "Continue" and follow the prompts
Your room should be your name (or username) and prep.  If you want to make one for each period that works too.  But I think the fewer you have the easier it will be.

You can still add a link to anything IN Canvas with some similar wording as below.
Students please join me in my office hours from 10-12 on Tuesdays.
Go here meet.google.com and join the room "lastnameprep" (no "  ")

Here are some detailed instructions.

ScreenCastify install extension

Teachers can get the pro version for free.  I do not want to add the code here because it is not for everyone - only teachers.  I have e-mailed it to you but if you need it again just let me know and I can resend it.  No problem.  Students DO NOT need the free version, nor do I think they can get it.  It is for teachers.  But they (students) CAN use the regular version just fine.

Here is how to add it to Chrome.

You can also install it by using the waffle and searching for it.  Same / same!
Here is the Video I made above from ScreenCastify.

Canvas / Google Meet

You can now add Google Hangouts Meet DIRECTLY in to your Canvas class. You can add it anywhere but if you want students "live" it may be best add to your calendar if you want students to know when your it is.  In my example below I added it to a page, but you can add it to most editable items in Canvas. It is just a code/link for them to click.
UPDATE on 3/30 I do not see the external tool icon in the calendar editing box.  I would make a page with YOUR hangout info on to store... Then make a calendar item and copy and paste YOUR hangouts info into the text box.

Videos

I started making some videos for individuals but of course all can see them too.  I am just going to put a link to my folder here  They should be named so you can tell what they are.  When YOU make videos be sure to name them appropriately before you share or link to them.  Otherwise links may get broken if you re-name them after you link to them.

Printing - NO.

I am seeing and hearing from students that some teachers are having students print, complete the assignment, take a picture or bring it back to the school.  PLEASE don't.  We have over 200 Chromebooks checked out to students.  Remember they do NOT print!  It also defeats the purpose of Canvas.  If you need help creating assignments or ideas to NOT print, please come see me and or colleagues for ideas.
