UPDATE on 3/30 I do not see the external tool icon in the calendar editing box. I would make a page with YOUR hangout info on to store... Then make a calendar item and copy and paste YOUR hangouts info into the text box.
You can now add Google Hangouts Meet DIRECTLY in to your Canvas class. You can add it anywhere but if you want students "live" it may be best add to your calendar if you want students to know when your it is. In my example below I added it to a page, but you can add it to most editable items in Canvas. It is just a code/link for them to click.

To see which students have logged to your class recently teachers can.
VideosI started making some videos for individuals but of course all can see them too. I am just going to put a link to my folder here They should be named so you can tell what they are. When YOU make videos be sure to name them appropriately before you share or link to them. Otherwise links may get broken if you re-name them after you link to them. Printing - NO.I am seeing and hearing from students that some teachers are having students print, complete the assignment, take a picture or bring it back to the school. PLEASE don't. We have over 200 Chromebooks checked out to students. Remember they do NOT print! It also defeats the purpose of Canvas. If you need help creating assignments or ideas to NOT print, please come see me and or colleagues for ideas.
PLEASE Keep in mind I CAN show you how to do all this. Do NOT struggle with it - ASK, lets set up a time. I will be offering after school training's at a socially distant distance!
Video Chats (office hours)If you do any video chat or office hours with students (or anyone). you have two options.
CanvasDo NOT upload Word docs to Canvas!
What would a student do with a work doc on a Chromebook? Okay they would view it or open as Google Doc. So why don't you save the 180 steps and do it for them. From Canvas you should be linking to your own Google docs. the best reason is that your document is live and if you make changes students will see the change right away! If you are convinced that Word is better I would agree. BUT Not for working with students in Canvas! You can also save your Word doc as a pdf. Just go to File - Save As - and select .pdf That preserves all the formatting you used and makes it open on any device. IF you make a change. You need to save it again as a .pdf then replace the one you uploaded. 1) Use Google docs. 2) pdf. 3) Word docs only if needed as a word doc in a special situation. Just an FYI…
The district provides us with enough tools inside of Google, (check out this link) www.office.com and Canvas. If you venture outside of these approved tools please be aware they may not be "approved" and you are "on your own" as far as support and legalities. Specifically zoom is what we I am talking about here... There have been some privacy issues already. NO - I have NOT read it all. We have other depts. that do all the legal stuff!... Remember this rule of thumb (under normal circumstances) - If software is free – YOU, or your data, is the customer! https://mashable.com/article/zoom-conference-call-work-from-home-privacy-concerns/ If you do any Video calls with your students be very aware of your surroundings and background and wardrobe! And that they should do the same. Especially IF they can see each other. Q and A
With all due respect … None of this is new – but yes it is NOW needed. Q. How do turn off Canvas messages to my e-mail. A. In your Account/Notifications Scroll down to "Conversations" and change the Conversation Message notification to never. 2cents. Notifications take time. Some one asked the other day why it took 6 hours for Outlook to send back to Canvas. Honestly I am surprised it even works. Suggestions - Live in Canvas for student and class content. That is what it is for! Don't fill up your e-mail with students/class stuff. That does NOT mean don't communicate with them - it means keep in Canvas! Set a time that you WILL answer all questions and do it. Q. Can you access your M drive (and S drive) from home? A. Yes. Portal/District Resources/web Storage (Green tile) all your folders and files are there but you may have to click the < page #'s > arrows at the bottom. 2Cents – It sucks! You have to download the file you want…. Edit away then upload the new file… Now you have two copies. Suggestion – use Google Dr. or One Drive and edit files live or on-line. Q. How do I access Canvas? A. Go to any schools' website click on Canvas or go through the portal. 2Cents -Seriously! The front office has had calls! I think the main office should send an e-mail to all. If you (teachers) do the kids (and parents too) will get 8-ish e-mails. Suggestion – I think you need to focus ONLY on your class. I can put messages to ALL in the top of Canvas. Yes, most people just close them… but we can only do so much! Q. How do I get to Teams at home A. Go the portal click on Office 365 (or got to www.office.com log in find the Teams button. On the left click Chat. That is the new Skype. 2Cents – it is built in to the larger app called Teams. Which has many more powerful tools that I sampled today with those who came to the Video Conf. Suggestions. Use it! There are other options but this works on Chromebooks and on devices. DO NOT add the Office 365 button on you Canvas Navigation. All that does is embed OneDrive files. NOT what you want. Q – How do we get a hold of you my STS/LMETS? A – See above! Chat in Teams. 2Cents – I have the app on my phone and it works with chat and calls. You do not need my cell #. If you do get my cell # some how and you are not in my contacts your call goes right to voicemail just like a telemarketer! Suggestions – If you leave a message I will get back to you. Promise. Q What if parents don't get the messages? A. Not our fault. Move on. 2Cents. If they registered their student properly they have an account and can log in to the Portal, Canvas and Grade book and get the same messages students get. Instructions have been sent by the district numerous times. Suggestions - Parents go the portal and log in. If that does not work click forgot password, or set up and account. |
